I came across this wonderful poster (The Rebellion, Its Cause and Cure) which promotes: A meeting for a free discussion of the Great Principle involved in the present War for the Union to be held on September 24th [1862] at the Wigwam, which I'd suspect was a tavern or bar of that time. I'd guess that this meeting would've been a recruitment session to encourage Haverstraw natives to join the Union army since several Union regiments included recruits from the village. Haverstraw and its environs played an especially important role in Revolutionary War history and this poster indicates that her sons continued to serve faithfully the Union cause.

The most famous, and controversial, spy of World War One was Mata Hari - actually Margaretha Geertruida Zelle McLeod - a Dutch born woman who carried embellishment and exotic stripping to an art form. But was she ever really a spy? So many myths and legends have surrounded her past that it's hard to tell reality from mystery. She was an admitted courtesan, was not as she invented, an exotic dancer from India, and she was shot by the French as a spy on October 15th 1917. Historians now say that her principal French accuser was in reality a spy for the Germans and that her death was as much a needless charade as were her bumbled attempts at spying.

These classic war posters have become genuine historical documents providing a fascinating insight in to a difficult period of world history. Their visual, social and political content demonstrate the importance of the artist and the cartoonist in times of national emergency. These posters and others like them played an integral part in maintaining morale. The imagery and colour reflect the fashions and objects of the times and at a deeper level they illustrate peoples' attitudes and the government's approach to propaganda. It's easy to be blase now, but times were rough; as well as the bombs and rockets and the loss of loved ones, there was genuine hardship combined with real fears of invasion. Governments launched propaganda campaigns to galvanize public support and recruited some of their foremost cartoonists and artists in the ongoing battle for the hearts and minds on the home front and beyond.
